Name: Professor Dre
Role: Cello, Violin
Fast Fact: Her 400-year-old cello has more than once saved her life.
Bio: Professor Dre holds five doctorates. One in Medieval Philosophy, one in Internet Security, one in African History, and two in cello. And you wondered why they called her the professor.
From humble beginnings she arose; a child prodigy bent on self-improvement. Born Andrea Aloysius Jones in Lancaster, England, she first set foot in college when she was 14. Her inaugural degree came at 16. To her, the University of London was merely a junior college – a stepping stone to Cambridge and Oxford. Flying through these programs with consecutive ease, she soon had three doctorates to her name. Despite her unparalleled success, education left her hungering for something more. Most prodigies you hear of these days burn out, only to work in the game-show industry as washed-up hacks. Young Ms. Jones, however, was a different story. She found that knowledge alone could not bring her satisfaction.
And so she fled pastoral England. Boston became her new home. Settling in quickly, she worked as an associate professor at Boston University teaching art history. In her spare time she advocated peace and justice for all, helping found the Boston chapter of You Want A Peace Of Me? As for hobbies, she bought a pawn-shop cello and taught herself to play. This created a clamor in the local music community. Eventually, she relented and accepted the unsolicited offer from the New England Conservatory of Music. She loved cello so much that she went through the program twice.
Leaving Boston behind, she moved to the Windy City to take a position with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. While in residence, she began the “Cello Knows” program, bringing musical hope and education to disadvantaged youths. During one such session two strange looking characters appeared. They spoke of revolution, the tyranny of soulless music, and the battle they waged against it. When they invited her participation, she gladly lent her support.
